Yootz & Rootz
This project is about exploring British heritage and decolonising our understanding of world history, with a focus on Pan-Afrikan context, global indigenous identities, and how these relate to contemporary culture. Yootz & Rootz connects local young people to our diverse cultural heritage through intergenerational collaboration, nature, culture, history and tradition. Participants use hip hop based activities to share their new knowledge and ideas such as story telling, poetry/lyric writing, graffiti, drama & dance.
“Students were not only given a chance to learn new things, but also to work with lots of different creative people from different cultural, ethnic and creative backgrounds. For many students this was something very different; a great experience of gaining insight about how creative things are made - a piece of music, an item of clothing, a wooden structure, a film, a spoken word piece… even electricity! Students’ behaviour and participation was excellent, they all got involved, wanted to share their ideas, and worked well with one another.” - Deputy Head Teacher.
